The impressive range of habitats and species found within a relatively small area makes the Danube Delta a vital centre of biodiversity, and a natural genetic bank of incomparable value.

Europe's largest and least damaged wetland covers an area of 5,800 square kilometres. It has been internationally recognised since the early 1990s when declared a Biosphere Reserve and Ramsar site, and over 50% of its area was placed on the World Heritage List. Mammals found here include golden jackal, raccoon, otter, wildcat, steppe polecat and European ground squirrel; other local specialities are European fire-bellied toad, European pond turtle, plus many dragonflies and damselflies.
